Our verdict
ConvertKit (Kit)
Best email tool for creators, newsletters, and digital products

ConvertKit's tagging and segmentation system is the best for creators building audience-based businesses. The free tier is generous — up to 10,000 subscribers. Commerce features let you sell digital products directly. Not the right tool for e-commerce or complex B2B automation.

What works
  • Free up to 10,000 subscribers
  • Best tagging and segmentation for creators
  • Sell digital products and paid newsletters natively
  • Clean, focused interface — nothing extraneous
  • 30% lifetime recurring affiliate program
What doesn't
  • Email template editor is basic
  • No built-in CRM
  • Limited landing page customization
  • Less powerful automation than ActiveCampaign

What ConvertKit is actually for

ConvertKit was built for bloggers and course creators who want to turn an audience into a business. The product philosophy is subscriber-first: every contact is a person with tags and interests, not just an email address in a list. Sequences, automations, and commerce all flow from that model.

If you're building a paid newsletter, selling online courses, writing a blog with an email list, or running any kind of creator business — ConvertKit is built for exactly that use case. The commerce features are genuinely good: you can sell digital downloads and subscriptions without needing a separate e-commerce tool.

The free tier

Free up to 10,000 subscribers with unlimited email sends. No time limit. You lose automations and sequences on the free plan, but broadcasts and basic forms work indefinitely. This is one of the most generous free tiers in email marketing.

Who should use something else

E-commerce businesses doing abandoned cart sequences and product recommendation emails should use Klaviyo. B2B companies with complex lead scoring and CRM integration needs should use ActiveCampaign. Simple small business newsletters that don't need creator-specific features may prefer MailerLite (free up to 1,000 subscribers, full features) over Mailchimp's significantly tighter 2026 free tier.

The features that actually justify the price

Two things separate Kit from cheaper alternatives, and neither shows up on a feature comparison checklist:

Tag-based segmentation. Most email tools force you into list-based thinking — separate lists for newsletter subscribers, course buyers, free trial signups. Kit lets you tag a single subscriber with all of those attributes and segment fluidly. This sounds minor until you've built a creator business with multiple offers; then it becomes the reason you can't go back to anything else.

Creator Network and Recommendations. Kit's built-in cross-promotion network lets your subscribers be recommended to other creators in your niche, and vice versa. For newsletter growth, this is meaningfully different from any other email tool. Beehiiv has a similar Boosts system; Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, and MailerLite have nothing comparable.

Events in automations. Kit's automation builder supports "events" — a subscriber can jump out of a sequence when they buy a product, hit a milestone, or take a specific action. ActiveCampaign has this. MailerLite and Beehiiv largely don't, which means subscribers who already bought your course will keep getting your sales sequence emails. Sounds small. Isn't.

Questions

Depends on the business. ConvertKit is excellent for creator businesses — courses, newsletters, digital products, coaching. For a traditional small business doing promotional emails to customers, MailerLite or ActiveCampaign is a better fit.

ConvertKit for creators and newsletter operators who want simplicity and native commerce. ActiveCampaign for businesses that need complex automation, site tracking, and built-in CRM. ConvertKit is easier to learn; ActiveCampaign is more powerful for complex use cases.

In late 2024 ConvertKit rebranded to Kit. The product, features, and pricing are the same. The new URL is kit.com. Both names are used interchangeably — if you see "ConvertKit" or "Kit" they refer to the same product.
